Statement of Purpose
My name is Joseph Miles Reiter, and I am a currently in my second semester as a Spanish major at CSUMB. I decided to pursue Spanish as my major due to my appreciation for Mexican culture, as well as to polish my linguistic skills. My family ‘s business is farming berries locally. As such, I have worked extensively with Spanish speakers for much of my life, particularly in the last five years. Working for one and a half years, full time, after high school gave me the opportunity to vastly improve my Spanish speaking skills/knowledge of Mexican culture. I am very interested in many aspects of Mexican culture, including food, music, pastimes, traditions, etc.
So far at CSUMB, I have taken a few classes that have proved very rewarding and interesting to me. So far, my favorite class has been Span 307 (History & Politics of Mexico), taught by Dr. Gomez. Though I am more interested in Spanish history/culture than linguistics, I feel that linguistics is what I need to improve in most. I can comfortably converse in Spanish and feel I have a relatively broad understanding of Mexico’s history and culture. I plan to farm strawberries in the Watsonville area upon graduating from CSUMB. I am confident that my studies at CSUMB will provide me with valuable knowledge that will prove functional in my future career as a California berry grower.
