Span 322: Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature: Latin America & the Caribbean
Reading and discussion of selected masterworks of literature as they reflect the historical, political, and social context of the Latin American and Caribbean experience. Students are introduced to critically reading, writing, and discussing the form and content of these literary masterpieces. Taught in Spanish.
This class was taught by Dr. Donaldo Urioste. During this course we did a lot of reading, both in class and at home. We read a variety of different poems and stories by some of the most famous authors of Latin America. We read aloud in class often, and after the reading would discuss the significance of what was said and how it related to society/culture of the given place at that time. This class introduced me to important historical and political events that took place in various Latin American and Caribbean countries through literature. I believe it also improved my Spanish reading skills. However, it was hard for me to understand some of the content of these stories, as they were relatively old and used a style of language/writing that I was not familiar with. This is something that I will hopefully be able to improve upon with more exposure. This course satisfies MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge, and MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge.
